The colonists believed that they were entitled to their rights. They had been living under British rule for a century and for the longest time the thirteen colonies were being neglected by the British rule. A group of colonists then became convinced that Britain was not only abusing them but depriving them of basic rights. However, if they wanted to establish a government for themselves, they would need something to go off. This led to the Articles of Confederation, which was the basis of the new nation's government.
