Tablet computer	Computer with flat screen that uses a mouse or fingertip for input instead of a keyboard. Similar to PDA's tablet PCs use a writing pen or stylus to write notes on the screen and touch the screen to perform functions such as clicking link to a website.
Personal computer (Microcomputer)	Computer that is operated by a single user who can customize the functions to match personal preferences.
Desktop computer	Computer that sits on, next to or under a user's desk and is too large to carry around. Computer box (tower) holds CPU, RAM and storage devices and has separate monitor.
Workstations Computers	Similar to desktop but has more powerful mathematical and graphics processing capabilities and can perform more complicated tasks in less time. Used for ebusiness, software design, web development , engineering.
Minicomputer (Server)	Designed to meet the computing needs of several people simultaneously in a small to medium-size business environment.
Mainframe computer	Designed to meet the computing needs of hundreds of people in a large business environment. are a step up in size , power, capabilities and cost of minicomputers.
Supper computer	Fastest, most powerful, and most expensive type of computer. Organizations such as NASA that are heavily involved in research and number crunching employ supper computer because of the speed of processing information. GM and AT&T use
primary storage	computer's main memory which consists of the RAM, ROM, cache memory that is directly accessible to the CPU
Single use license	restricts the use of the software to one user at a time.
Application Service provider license	specialty software paid for on a license basis or per-use basis or usage-based licensing.

system clock	works like a wristwatch and uses a battery mounted on the motherboard to provide power when the computer is turned off.
Utility software	provides additional functionality to the operating system. ..antivirus , screen savers, anti spam
Input device	equipment used to capture information and commands.

system software	controls how the various technology tools work together along with the application software. Includes both operation system software and utility software.
multitasking	allows more than one piece of software to be used at a time. Printing excel graph and working on paper in word.

central processing unit (CPU) or microprocessor	is the actual hardware that interprets and executes the program (software) instructions and coordinates how all the other hardware works together
CPU contains two primary parts	Control unit and arithmetic- logic unit (ALU)
control unit	interprets software instructions and tells the other hardware devices how to work together.
volatility	refers to a device's ability to function with or without power.
personal information management software (PIF)	handles contact information, appointments, tasks list and email.
Random access memory (RAM)	computer's primary working memory, in which program instructions and data are stored so they can be accessed directly by the CPU via processor's high speed external data bus.
word length	number of bits (0 & 1's ) that can be processed by CPU at any one time. Computer work in terms of bits and byes using electrical pulses that have two states on and off
bus width	size of the internal electrical pathway along which signals are sent from one part of the computer to another.
Chip line width	distance between transistors on a chip
Reduced Instruction set computer (RISC) chips	limit the number of instructions the CPU can execute to increase processing speed.
System restore	enables user's to return to previous operation system.
volatile	means it must have constant power to function, contents are lost when the computer's electric supply fails.
Complex instructions set computer (CISC) chips	chips, type of CPU that can recognize as many as 100 or more instructions, enough to carry out most computations directly.
Flash memory (flash drive)	special type of rewrite able read-only memory (ROM) that is compact and portable
magnetic medium	secondary storage medium that uses magnetic techiques to store and retrieve data on disks or tapes coated with magnetically sensitive materials.
memory sticks	provide nonvolatile memory for a range of protable devices including computers, cameras, mps players and pda's
ROM Read-only memory	is the portion of a computer's primary memory that does not lose its contents when power is switched off
