Why were the mercenaries called Hessians?

The term is an American synecdoche for all Germans who fought on the British side, since 65% came from the German states of Hesse-Kassel and Hesse-Hanau. Known for their discipline and martial prowess, around 30,000 Germans fought for the British during the war, comprising a quarter of British land forces.

Who were the mercenaries during the Revolutionary War?

Explanation: The primary mercenaries of the American Revolution were German Hessians fighting for the British. Some American Indian Tribes were recruited on both sides, and when the French allies with the Colonies some of their troops were also mercenaries.

Are the Hessians British?

Trivia. Hesperia is based on the nations of Western Europe and North America, such as the United Kingdom and the United States, but perhaps particularly on the British Empire in its colonial history.

Who fought the Hessians?

About 900 Hessian soldiers and officers were taken prisoner by General Washington and the Continental Army following the Battle of Trenton on December 26, 1776.
