    Answer D
Option D - Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) refers to giving a brief electric shock to the brain in the hope of reversing the brain’s neurochemical patterns associated with specific mental health symptoms. It was a widely utilized procedure in the twentieth century but has been phased out over time as it's only a contingency measure to be used rarely. The most common use was associated with institutionalized psychotic patients such as schizophrenics and so forth. So, option D is the appropriate answer choice.
Option A - ECT gained prominence after the rapid institutionalization of mental health patients who were mostly ostracized because of their illnesses. The earlier perspectives in psychiatry were focused on halting the symptoms rather than addressing the cause and thus, ECT was a good option to induce temporary seizures and control the patient. However, modern theoretical and applied advancements address the causes and utilize pharmacotherapy pathways to address mental illnesses, making an ECT a rare option to use only as the last measure in the face of all other alternatives turning out futile.
Option B - Electroconvulsive therapy basically induces an electric shock to cause controlled brain seizures and convulses the individual to reverse the symptoms inducing neurochemistry. This was mostly used against patients with psychotic symptoms and severe distortion of reality in the form of hallucinations, delusions and so forth. Since these symptoms are the definitive constructs of schizophrenia, ECT was mostly used against schizophrenics.
Option C - Psychotic symptoms such as hallucinations and delusions have neural activations which make them perceive reality in a distorted manner. This has been proven by brain scans and electroencephalography of various psychotic patients. The objective of ECT is to overpower this neural activation and reverse it through an electrical surge by inducing seizures and resulting in convulsions.
