Is a disciplined process of actively and skillfully conceptualizing analyzing synthesizing applying and evaluating information?

1. Critical thinking is the ability to discover the value of an idea, a set of beliefs, a claim, or an argument.

It requires you to use logic and reasoning to evaluate evidence or information to make a decision or

reach a conclusion. Critical thinking is a foundation for effective communication, the principal skill used

in effective decision making, at the core of creating new knowledge, a way to uncover bias and

prejudices.

“Critical thinking is the intellectually disciplined process of actively and skillfully

conceptualizing, applying, analyzing, synthesizing, and/or evaluating information gathered from,

or generated by, observation, experience, reflection, reasoning, or communication, as a guide to

belief and action. In its exemplary form, it is based on universal intellectual values that transcend

subject matter divisions: clarity, accuracy, precision, consistency, relevance, sound evidence,

good reasons, depth, breadth, and fairness”.(Michael,S & Richard ,P,1987)

2. Employers nowadays claiming that University graduates are lacking critical-thinking and

problem-solving skills, In 2010, the Satisfaction Survey was conducted in over 900 employers around

the US- “employers gave students very low grades on nearly all of the 17 learning outcomes

explored in the study”—including critical thinking—and that students “judge themselves to be

far better prepared for post-college success than do employers.”(Jenkins, 2017)

According to Jenkins,2017 graduate students graded themselves significantly higher with the

level of critical skills and problem-solving when the employers ranked them lower while critical

thinking is a fundamental skill required by employers to perform a job, whether manual work or

office position.

It is the job of universities to teach critical thinking, but the responsibility of the students to think.
