Lissing wuchs in Sydney im Stadtteil Bondi Beach auf.[2][3] Lissing war zunächst als Musiker tätig. Auf Anraten seines damaligen Musikagenten ging Lissing zu einer Audition für Werbespots und wurde engagiert.[3] Seine eigentliche Film- und Fernsehkarriere begann, abgesehen von einigen kleinen früheren Rollen, im Jahr 2006.[1] Eine Schauspielschule besuchte Lissing, auch später, nicht.[3] Er spielte zunächst als Gaststar in der erfolgreichen Fernsehserie Home and Away; in den Folgen 4237–4271 verkörperte er den neuen Feuerwehrmann (Fire Officer) Dave Elder.[4] Es folgten Episodenrollen in den australischen Fernsehserien Out of the Blue (2008; als Angus „Tiger“ McKinon) und Die Chaosfamilie (2008–2009; als Heath).[1]

2009 spielte er die Hauptrollen in zwei Kurzfilmen, Whiteline und Multiple Choice, was zu Engagements in australischen Fernsehserien führte.[3] 2010 hatte er eine Episodenrolle in der australischen Krimiserie Cops L.A.C. Er spielte den Zeugen Ryan und war in dieser Rolle auch mit nacktem, durchtrainierten Oberkörper zu sehen.[5] Lissing wurde seither regelmäßig als gutaussehender, australischer Fernsehdarsteller und als Sex-Symbol vermarktet.[1][6] Er wurde als „Aussie heartthrob“ bezeichnet.[2]

Ab 2011 gehörte er zum Hauptcast der australischen Fernsehserie Crownies; er spielte Conrad De Groot,[7] den Verlobten der Rechtsanwältin Tatum Novak (Indiana Evans); diese Rolle verkörperte er bis zum Ende der Serie im Jahr 2011. 2011 war er in dem Kurzspielfilm Entwined, einer Mischung aus Filmdrama und Bollywood-Film, in der männlichen Hauptrolle zu sehen. Er spielte den Australier Aiden, der eine Liebesromanze mit der indischen Austauschstudentin Dalaja hat, deren Visa-Papiere gerade abgelaufen sind.

2012 stieg er bei der US-amerikanischen Fernsehserie Last Resort ein. Er spielte den Fähnrich zur See (Petty Officer) der U.S Navy und Navy SEAL James King.[8][9] Last Resort war das erste Mal, dass Lissing für das US-amerikanische Fernsehen vor der Kamera stand.[10]

In dem Spielfilm The Cure spielte er, unter der Regie von David Gould, den Biochemiker Ryan Earl, einen Wissenschaftler aus gutem Haus, der als Mitglied eines Forschungsteam davon überzeugt ist, dass seine Arbeit mehr Anerkennung und Wertschätzung verdient.[11] 2014 übernahm er in dem Kriminalthriller John Doe: Vigilante die Rolle des Fernsehjournalisten Jake.

Von Januar 2014 bis April 2018 spielte er in der US-amerikanischen Westernserie Janette Oke: Die Coal Valley Saga die männliche Hauptrolle des Royal Canadian Mounted Police OfficerConstable Jack Thornton.[2] 2015 spielte er in der Fernsehserie Eye Candy an der Seite von Victoria Justice. Aufsehen erregten hier insbesondere die Liebes- und Sex-Szenen zwischen Lissing und Justice.[12][13]

Lissing ist neben seiner Tätigkeit als Schauspieler weiterhin auch als Singer-Songwriter tätig; er gab verschiedene Konzerte in Sydney.[10] Er trat im Rahmen der Truppenbetreuung auch vor den Australischen Streitkräften (Australian Defense Force), die auf Ost-Timor im Pazifischen Ozean stationiert waren, auf.[10] Für seinen Einsatz um den Frieden in Ost-Timor wurde er von der Australian Defense Force auch offiziell geehrt.[10]

Lissing wurde in der Juni/Juli-Ausgabe 2012 des Inside Film Magazine als eines der „aufstrebenden australischen Talente“ („Australia's Rising Talents“) bezeichnet.[10] Die australische Fernsehzeitschrift TV Week Magazine beschrieb Lissing als einen von „Australiens attraktivsten Kerlen im Fernsehen“ („Australia's Sexiest Blokes on Television“).[10]

Hearties agree: When Calls the Heart hasn't been the same since the heartbreaking season 5 finale. At the tail-end of the Hallmark show's fifth season, Jack Thornton (played by Daniel Lissing) was on an assignment with a group of recruits when he was tragically killed by a landslide. Before he left, the Mountie wrote a letter to his wife Elizabeth (played by Erin Krakow) in fear that the assignment would be too much for his body to bear. The letter, which was shown in the finale episode, read:

"My dearest Elizabeth, I’m writing a letter I hope you never have to read. If you are, then you know I won’t be coming home. Take comfort that I will be watching over you for the rest of your days. I will always be with you in spirit. But I need you to promise me one thing, Elizabeth: you will open your heart to love again. Know that I want nothing more than your happiness. You are the perfect woman. You showed me what it feels like to be truly loved. For that, I am eternally grateful. Yours forever, Jack."

While the show has carried on and Elizabeth has opened her heart to another love (or two), many Hearties still want to know the reason behind Jacks' death. For Lissing, who played Jack for five seasons, this moment seemed like a natural progression for his career — and his character. "Circumstances arose for me where I needed to leave When Calls the Heart for reasons that are very personal to me," he said in a Facebook Live, according to Entertainment Tonight. "I went to Hallmark and they were nothing but supportive of me. I went to the girls and they were nothing but supportive of me."

At the time of his departure, his costars Erin Krakow and Lori Loughlin (who played Abigail Stanton on the show until she was written off the show in May 2019), opened up about how they really felt about Lissing's decision. "We are actors, and actors have contracts and sometimes those contracts expire and you have a choice to make," Loughlin explained to Entertainment Tonight. “You either renegotiate or you don’t, and Dan has chosen to move on, we respect that."

Krakow, who filmed most of her scenes with Lissing, responded straight from the heart: "I was just sad that Dan was leaving. That's the bottom line: We were all really sad about it, and that's hard," she reflected. "Dan, in many ways, has been my partner in crime for five years, and one of my greatest scene partners ever, and I'm just really gonna miss him."

When it came time for the writers and producers to figure out how to write off Jack's character, Loughlin admitted that death was the only option. "The only way he (Jack) would leave her (Elizabeth) is in death," she said. Luckily, the heartbreak was followed by some good news: At the start of season 6, Hearties learned that Elizabeth was pregnant with Jack's child a.k.a. baby Jack. Some fans even seem to think — okay, hope — that Jack will make a triumphant return to the show, whether it's in a flashback scene or as a ghost.

Even though he's off the show, Lissing is still a part of the Hallmark family, regularly posting photos with his former costars and behind-the-scenes moments on new Hallmark Channel projects. Still, he continues to rave about his experience playing Jack on the highest-rated Hallmark Channel show: "When I came out to the United States, as a guy who was playing [music] in bars in Sydney, to think that I would play a character like Jack on an American TV show is beyond anything I could've ever imagined."

Since his departure from the show, Lissing has gone on to play recurring characters on S.W.A.T. and The Rookie.
