Acceptable Primary ID Documents

Testing Within Your Country of Citizenship

The following ID documents are acceptable for admission to a test center within your country of citizenship:

  • Residents of Mainland China must present a valid Second Generation National Resident ID with name and photograph.
  • Residents of Taiwan must present their Travel Permit to Mainland China.
  • Residents of Hong Kong and Macau must present their Travel Permit to Mainland China.

Note: For residents of Mainland China taking an at home test, your primary ID should be a valid passport. If you do not have a passport, a valid Second Generation National Resident ID is needed.

Testing Outside Your Country of Citizenship

If you are testing outside your country of citizenship:

  • Citizens from all other countries and locations must present a valid passport.
  • If your passport is not written in English-language letters, you must also present as supplemental ID at least one of the documents listed under Supplemental ID Documents. This document must also contain your name, a recent, recognizable photo and be in English.

All ID documents must include your name, photograph and signature to be acceptable.

  • If your passport is not written in English-language letters, you must also present at least one Supplemental ID Document. This document must also include your name, a recent, recognizable photo and be in English.

Acceptable Primary ID Documents

The preferred primary ID is a valid passport with your name, photograph and signature.

ETS is temporarily accepting the Aadhaar Card as a primary ID for test takers in India until further notice. The Aadhaar Card must be an original document. Photocopied or printed documents are not acceptable, and documents cannot be presented on a mobile device.

2 If you are in the U.S. military and the expiration of your driver’s license has been extended or deferred by the issuing state, it can be used as supplemental ID along with your U.S. military ID card. Depending on the state, the extension or deferral may consist of a sticker on the license, the designation “military” printed in place of an expiration date, or a separate document carried with the license, usually with a notation that the license is valid until a specific amount of time after discharge from service.

3 If your driver’s license has expired but you present it along with your original Department of Public Safety renewal certificate, the 2 documents together can be accepted if the names match exactly. If a provisional driver’s license was issued instead of a renewal certificate, this will be accepted as a primary ID document if it includes your photograph, signature and an expiration date.

Testing Outside Your Country of Citizenship

If you are testing outside your country of citizenship:

  • You must present a valid passport with your name, photograph and signature as your primary ID.
  • If your document is missing a photo or signature, it can be presented along with at least 1 of the documents listed under Supplemental ID Documents earlier in this section.
  • If your passport is not written in English-language letters, you must also present at least one Supplemental ID Document. This document must also include your name, a recent, recognizable photo and be in English.
  • If you are in the process of renewing the document and you only have the expired document, you may present it together with the government-issued extension letter.
  • Diplomatic and embassy IDs cannot be used as primary identification in place of passports.

Acceptable Documents if Presented with Supplemental ID

The following documents may be acceptable for admission to U.S. test centers if presented along with a Supplemental ID:

  • Permanent Resident Card/Resident Alien Card (Form I-551 or I-151)
  • Temporary Resident Card (Form I-688)
  • Employment Authorization Card (From I-688A, I-688B, or I-766)
  • Mexican Border Crossing Card – accepted only at test centers within 25 miles of the Mexican border

  • If the alternative document is missing your photo or signature, it must be presented along with a secondary ID, in the same name you used when you registered, such as a driver's license, student ID card, letter of identity from a school or sponsoring agency, or Canadian Health Card.
  • Diplomatic and embassy IDs cannot be used as primary identification in place of passports.

IMPORTANT: Your National ID cannot be used as your primary ID when you register for the TOEFL test. Your National ID will be accepted if you present it at the test center, but when you register you must use a different ID. Enter your Passport (if you have one) or use the "Other" field to enter your driver's license or another acceptable form of ID. Do not enter your National ID in the "Other" field.

The following ID documents are acceptable for admission to a test center within your country of citizenship:

    If your driver's license is expired and you have been issued a renewal certificate receipt, providing both documents together is acceptable as long as the name on the expired driver's license and the name on the renewal certificate are the same.
