The colonists believed that they were entitled to their rights. They had been living under British rule for a century and for the longest time the thirteen colonies were being neglected by the British rule. A group of colonists then became convinced that Britain was not only abusing them but depriving them of basic rights. Their strong core values for independence, freedom, and basic human rights is what help spread the idea that a revolution was needed.
However, if they wanted to establish a government for themselves, they would need something to go off. This led to the Articles of Confederation, which was the basis of the new nation's government. The colonists wanted to create a nation that would not deprive the citizens of their rights andwould not treat them like Britain did. It would be a free nation so to speak.
The values and beliefs of having freedom and basic rights have dramatically affected politics today. Politics still revolve around basic human rights (making gay marriage legal, giving transgender people rights, giving people of different races rights, etc). If the colonists did not do anything about being neglected, thiscountry could still be under British rule and deprived of certain unalienable rights.
