owned by IBM - provides a framework for breaking down the development of software into four gates. Each gate consists of executable iterations of the software in development
1.inception - this phase includes inception of the business case. this phase ensures all stakeholders have a shared understanding of the system
2. elaboration - this phase provides a rough order of magnitude - primary questions answered in this phase deal with agreed-upon details of the system including the ability to provide an architecture to support and build the system
3.construction - this phase includes building and developing the product.
4. Transition - primary questions answered in this phase address ownership of the system and training of key personnel.

100 % rule
A rule requiring 100 percent planning of all tasks, including all of the internal, external, and interim tasks.
15 15 rule
A rule suggesting that if a project is more than 15 percent over budget or 15 percent off the planned schedule, it will likely never recoup the time or cost necessary to be considered successful. At this point a decision needs to be made on if or how to proceed from that point.
analysis phase
The phase of the SDLC involves a complete, detailed analysis of the systems needs of the end user as well as a proposed solution.
critical path
The longest path for a project and represents the minimum amount of time needed for the completion of the project when sufficient resources are allocated.
design phase
phase of the SDLC that involves describing in detail the desired features of the system that were uncovered in the analysis phase.
gantt chart
A graphical representation of the project schedule that maps the tasks to a project calendar.
implementation phase
The phase of the SDLC that involves development, testing, and implementation of the new proposed system.
maintenance phase
The final phase of the SDLC that includes making changes, corrections, additions, and upgrades (generally smaller in scope) to ensure the system continues to meet the business requirements that have been set out for it.
perceived ease of use
The extent to which a person perceives that the use of a particular system will be relatively free from effort.
perceived usefulness
The extent to which users believe the system will help them perform their job better.
planning phase
The phase of the SDLC that summarizes the business needs with a high-level view of the intended project.
PERT (Program Evaluation Review Technique)
A project management tool used to help
identify all tasks needed to complete a project. It is also
helpful in determining task dependencies.
project
A series of tasks that are generally performed in a defined sequence to produce a predefined output.
project management
The process of carrying out the systems development life cycle to achieve an intended outcome.
project manager
The lead member of the project team who is responsible for the project.
project sponsor
Generally a senior executive in the company who takes responsibility for the
success of the project.
scope creep
The change in a project's scope after the project work has started.
systems analyst
Person responsible for both determining the information needs of the business and designing a system to meet those needs.
SDLC (Systems Development Life Cycle)
The process of creating or modifying information systems to meet the needs of its users. It serves as the foundation for all processes people use to develop such systems.
TAM (Technology Acceptance Model)
A model that predicts when users will adopt a new system to the extent they believe the system will help them perform their job better.
triple constraint
Three factors that constrain information technology and other projects: cost, scope, and time. Also known as Dempster's triangle.
WBS (Work Breakdown Structure)
The process of identifying all tasks needed to complete a project.

alignment
the planning phase should support and complement the business strategy of a firm.
relevant scope
the overall scope of the planning phase should be established to facilitate formulation of effective ways to address the business needs.
relevant timeframe
the appropriate planning horizon should be formulated that pro- vides both short- to medium-term deliverables as well as long-term alignment with the business strategy.
benefits realization
costs of implementation should be commensurate with the tangible and intangible benefits that are expected to be realized. The expected benefits should be bigger than the costs.
achievability
the planning phase should recognize the capability and capacity of the firm to deliver solutions within the stated planning timeframe.
measurable performance
the planning phase should provide a means to measure and monitor project performance and as a means of communicating success to both stake- holders inside and outside the firm.
reassessment
the plan should be periodically reassessed to ensure it is relevant to the evolving business strategy of the firm.
awareness
the resulting plan that comes out of the planning phase should be communicated widely.
accountability
identification of those responsible for implementing the plan should be explicitly clear.
commitment
management commitment to the plan's implementation should be clear and evident.

Determine whether the following arguments are inductive or deductive. If an argument is inductive, determine whether it is strong or weak. If it is deductive, determine whether it is valid or invalid. When a cook cannot recall the ingredients in a recipe, it is appropriate that she refresh her memory by consulting the recipe book. Similarly, when a student cannot recall the answers during a final exam, it is appropriate that she refresh her memory by consulting the textbook.

In a volleyball match, Jenny serves the volleyball at 14 m/s, from a height of 2.5 m above the court. The height of the ball in flight can be estimated using the equation $h = - 4.9 t ^ { 2 } + 14 t + 2.5$ where h is the height, in metres, and t is the time, in seconds, after she serves the ball. a) What is the maximum height of the volleyball above the court? When does this occur? Round answers to the nearest tenth. b) If a player on the other team contacts the ball at a height of 0.5 m above the court, how long does it take for the ball to reach her? Round to the nearest second.
