The institution through which a society makes and enforces its public policies
The Enlightenment
A philosophical movement which started in Europe in the 1700's and spread to the colonies. It emphasized reason and the scientific method. Writers of the enlightenment tended to focus on government, ethics, and science, rather than on imagination, emotions, or religion. Many members of the Enlightenment rejected traditional religious beliefs in favor of Deism, which holds that the world is run by natural laws without the direct intervention of God.

Declaration of Independence
Written by Thomas Jefferson and signed in 1776, it documented the reasons for colonial independence from British rule.

Reason why colonists went to war with England. Colonists thought it was unfair to be taxed by a government that they didn't have a voice in.
monarchy
A government in which power is in the hands of a single person, usually a king or queen
Democracy
A political system in which the supreme power lies in a body of citizens who can elect people to represent them
republic
A form of government in which the people select representatives to govern them and make laws.
