She's got her name on or at the door, to me I always thought it refers to the doorbell, hence the "at the door" translation, but could also be a plate on the door to her house or her apartment.
We have names on our doorbells or doors, I heard some countries do not have that (names, not doors), so "Name an der Tür" refers to just that. He belongs to her like her name belongs to her, and that is on her door because that is where she lives.
Could be a double meaning saying she married him and took on his name as well (which now would be at the door, too).
Lyrics to Er Gehört zu Mir, one of the most heartfelt Oktoberfest classics
Marianne Rosenberg's Er Gehört zu Mir (He belongs to me) could be one of the most heartfelt love songs in any language.
The child of an Auschwitz survivor (her mother was part Gypsy), Rosenberg recorded the song in 1975. She wanted to represent West Germany with it at the Eurovision Song Contest.
Rosenberg didn't make it in, but the song became an enduring classic nonethess.
She released remixes in 1988 and 2004 and even an English version called How Can I Go Now?
Rosenberg still records and performs music and looks even better today than she did in the seventies.
Lyrics to Er Gehört zu mir
(uhhhh) Was die Zukunft bringt? (uhhh)
Oder muss ich lernen, dass alles
zerrinnt?
Liebe vom Winde verweht ?
English Er Gehört zu mir Lyrics (Translation)
"He Belongs to me"
He belongs to me like my name on the door
And I know, he's staying here
I'll never forget our first
day
(nananananana)
Because I felt straight away that he liked me (nanananananana)
Is it true love (uhhhh), that won't fade away? (uhhhh)
Or will the love be blown away in the wind?
He belongs to me like my name on the door
And I know, he's staying here
We start everything together
(nananananana)
But I never forget how alone you can feel (nanananana)
Is it written in the stars? (uhhhh)
What the future brings? (uhhhh)
Or must I learn that everything melts away?
No, I haven't made it easy for him (nanananana)
I've asked myself more than once (nanananana)
Is it true love (uhhhh), that won't fade away? (uhhhh)
Or will the love be blown away in the wind?
He belongs to me...for ever to me (ohhhhhh)
He belongs to me...for ever to me.
He belongs to me like my name on the door
And I
know, he's staying here
